MUSIC IS A MORAL LAW,
IT GIVES SOUL TO THE UNIVERSE
WINGS TO THE MIND.
FLIGHT TO THE IMAGINATION
A CHARM TO SADNESS
GAIETY AND LIFE TO EVERYTHING.
IT IS THE ESSENCE
OF ORDER AND LENDS TO ALL
THAT IS GOOD,JUST, AND BEAUTIFUL.

You cannot imagine what a relief it was to realise that ' Nuits du Sud ' was finished on the 11th August....I think the whole town sighed with relief and exhaustion!!!  What with the heat of the summer and the over amplification of sound combined...it was just too much for those of us who live in and around the town.

I spoke to several ' regulars' who were sitting at ' Henry's Bar ' ( marvellous place! ) during one of the rehearsals which takes place during the afternoons . One friend has a pacemaker and has been warned by her doctor to stay away from this level of noise, I saw that she was feeling rather nervous and indeed she said to me that was how she felt as she sat there with her husband and friends. Another young woman told me that she had been obliged to leave the performance one evening because her heart started beating unevenly and she developed a 'strange feeling in her ears and head' !!!! This young woman is only in her thirty's so we can't conveniently put it down to ' age'.

On another occasion, early one morning after one of the  pop concert's, I was walking my dog through the town and saw a woman weeping in one of the cafe's....naturally I approached and asked if there was anything I could do? She told me that she worked in a Care Home further out of town and could hear it so strongly that she had been unable to sleep and  was faced that day with an 8 hour stretch of duty. I felt decidedly helpless and upset.

To be fair however, if this Festival was presented in a more ....what's the word?...Coherent ( in every sense of the word ) way without demanding the exclusivity of the venue, it could give greater pleasure to more people.

Now time has passed and I am asking myself if I want to make anymore effort locally.....probably the answer is NO. BUT I believe in keeping an ' Open Mind' as long as it's not a ' Vacant one!!!! 'if you see what I mean!!

Since I finished this article, I have been approached by the President of the Association Syrynx who are the official body trying to bring some musical choices other than Pop to the town. In the meantime , our Financial man married the Secretary RIP :-) and they are going to live in Dubai in September ...so  I am at a ' dead end'!!  I'll go and meet Jacques anyway to see if i can be of any assistance in some way or other.
