MUSIC IS A MORAL LAW,
IT GIVES SOUL TO THE UNIVERSE
WINGS TO THE MIND.
FLIGHT TO THE IMAGINATION
A CHARM TO SADNESS
GAIETY AND LIFE TO EVERYTHING.
IT IS THE ESSENCE
OF ORDER AND LENDS TO ALL
THAT IS GOOD,JUST, AND BEAUTIFUL.

TE DEUM.....
.I remember when I first started to become aware of Te Deum...the sensation was like a 'primordial' sound pulse, similar in feeling to being on the deck of a small sailing craft as a Liner passes some distance away, thus creating a ' Wake Wave'.

The first time I went to the piano to discover it, I very quickly created the introduction it wanted, using strings, horns and the magnificent Wagner Tuba marked (pp) ' lento penserioso'...thus creating an awesome feeling.

As often happens in creation, the music arrived prior to a close consideration of the text....In fact, the words' Te Deum' not only triggered the introduction but continued to resonate with me throughout the entire work....one could say that the two words are the hologram of the entire score

.
The author of the text is not certain but it is often accredited to a St Nicetus as early as c335 and consisted of the first part only, the petitions being added at a later date by another writer.

I make no apologies for setting the entire text for although the petitions are not in alignment with my own thinking, they are an example of a fundamental projection of the ego supporting an image in the human psyche of an external judgemental God.

.

As I continued to feel my way through the creative process, an idea surrounding the much discussed imminent arrival of the Age of Aquarius began to form in my mind.

As I understand it, this is a time in our history when we have great spiritual potential, both as individuals and as a race in a world dominated by fear and sorely in need of healing. An Age in which I have come to believe that we shall witness....indeed, are already witnessing... the Beauty and Nobility of the Human Spirit as it recognizes itself in all it's Glory! for indeed, where else is the Divine Presence if not in Thou and I? It simply seems to quietly await our recognition.

In this work, the four soloists represent four Astrological Bodies in our Solar System, which I refer to as 'Angelic Beings'. Aquarius, ruled by Uranus, Leo by the Sun,Taurus by Venus and Scorpio ruled by Pluto.

These four 'Angels' in their relationship to one another , form what is astrologically referred to as ' The Fixed Cross' . According to Alice Bailey ( Esoteric Astrology ) quote ' This is outstandingly the Cross of the Soul , This Cross says ' I am the Soul and here I stand, I am the Light and in that Light shall I Light'!!

If the four soloists represent these ' Angels' , the Chorus represents the World Soul and the Orchestra the Body of Mankind.

' Te Deum Laudamus, Te Deum Confitemur' . 'We praise you God, We acknowledge you as Lord, All the Earth venerates you, to you the Angels, the Cherubim and Seraphim sing with unending voice , Holy, Holy ,Holy ( Wholeness ), Lord God, of Hosts, Heaven and Earth are full of thy Glory

Following the introduction, and gradual orchestral build up , the Choir and Soloists burst upon us with this Hymn of Praise marked ' Maestoso' and unaccompanied.

My interpretation of these words, which inspired the whole work is, that it is a Hymn of Praise to the Incarnate Soul, which has finally chosen to abandon the Illusion of separation and embrace at- one- ment and in at- one- ment expresses Individuality instead of Personality, Compassion instead of Judgement and Love instead of Hate...for where else is the God of Hosts if not in Thou and I???

'Heaven and Earth are full of Thy ( Thou and I ) Glory! The Text and Music of Te Deum describes the struggle as the Soul confronts the fearful illusion of separation from the Divine Nature and it's projected image on to an external Deity. .

The Music expresses all the Human Emotions of Sadness, Joy and Triumph and finally in the release from the illusion comes to a Victorious conclusion with a dramatic key change in the AMEN, or SO BE IT! clothed in a rich Choral/Orchestral texture.

That Te Deum is linked to Requiem,( a work completed in 1997) there is no doubt!

. Requiem was premiered in' 97 at Nice , then played again at Vence Cathedral, Monaco Cathedral and at the Summer International Festival, Krakow, Poland. There was a British Premiere given by Arun Choral Society in Arundel Cathedral ,Sussex in 2006 plus broadcasts on Brisbane radio, Australia, and Saarbrucken Radio, Germany.
