MUSIC IS A MORAL LAW,
IT GIVES SOUL TO THE UNIVERSE
WINGS TO THE MIND.
FLIGHT TO THE IMAGINATION
A CHARM TO SADNESS
GAIETY AND LIFE TO EVERYTHING.
IT IS THE ESSENCE
OF ORDER AND LENDS TO ALL
THAT IS GOOD,JUST, AND BEAUTIFUL.

Henry's Bar is a small on the street Bar which attracts an international crowd of interesting people of all shapes and sizes.

We have Danes, Swedish, Canadian, French, British ,Dutch and so on......! As an added plus, we have a Staff who are charming, polite, have a  sense of humour and speak several languages!!  The coffee and the wine are awful but somehow it is of no importance when with this crowd.

Sometimes I take my score here to work and other times, I like to just be with the crowd. Recently, I was approached by a Canadian and his wife, whom I have come to know as ' regulars' here. Monsieur began talking about a recording of a Bruckner Symphony he had listened to. His complaint was that it was ' too slow' and lacked ' aggression '!!!!!!! Indeed I raised my eyebrows at the description! Should Music be ' aggressive'??

I recognised at once of course, the evils of recordings, discs, USB's and numerous other devices which purport to bring us ' quality' sound and 'the' interpretation of a well known and loved Symphony or Concerto, Choral Work and any number of Musical Creations!!

Someone sits in their living room , turns on a machine, picks a disc out of his ' library' put's his feet up and listens to digital sound!! 'Perfect'???? NO!! To be enriched by Music ,one must be ' Present' in all senses of the word.

During our discussion, it appeared very difficult to go beyond the fixed and measurable. I could see that to my friend , with his scientific training and educated way of thinking the score is a series of quantifiable, unchanging atoms, particles, electrons, etc , the interpretation of which is fixed in the score by the markings of the Composer and as such should be strictly adhered to!!

Now I am not criticising this...just observing it! After all, the scientific mind has played and does play  an important part in our 'understanding ' and 'misunderstanding' ( the other side of the coin being just as important ) of the Universe. However, this difficulty between us was simplified and better  understood when we considered the origins of Tone and organised Sound.

It was Schopenhauer, (a Philosopher greatly admired by Wagner ) and  Rudolph Steiner who drew our attention to the fact that Music ( unlike the Visual Arts ) has no model in the Physical World. It is a constant in what Steiner referred to as ' Devachan', a dimension we pass in and out of in sleep.

Tone can only be organised into  recognisable form  called Music when received from this dimension by an interpreter ( the Composer ) and translated into a score. Here Monsieur and I were on the solid ground of agreement....drinking out of the same glass if you like ...not literally!!!

Later, I showed him (very briefly)  an orchestral score of my own. We observed the metronome marks and he finally understood that the interpretation is flexible, flowing, dynamic and shall I say it? ....I think I will! Quantum!! There we are.

Finally, I said that  Composers are not necessarily the best people to conduct their own works...in my opinion. Our function is to receive the original in our Chakra System and use the Mind to translate the experience into recognisable form. Did I say 'Chakra System'??? well yes I did!! leading me nicely into another article in the future . Have a good day!!
