MUSIC IS A MORAL LAW,
IT GIVES SOUL TO THE UNIVERSE
WINGS TO THE MIND.
FLIGHT TO THE IMAGINATION
A CHARM TO SADNESS
GAIETY AND LIFE TO EVERYTHING.
IT IS THE ESSENCE
OF ORDER AND LENDS TO ALL
THAT IS GOOD,JUST, AND BEAUTIFUL.

I was in the Cafe with the score of the Double Concerto ( Solo Violin and Cello with Orchestra ),  sipping my coffee whilst carefully examining the Orchestral Parts , a normal routine. A friend entered and we got into conversation brieflly but only long enough to distance me from the score but not entirely disconnect me.

After our brief conversation, I turned my attention to the work in hand. Suddenly, I saw exactly what Pete  my Editor meant when he said, quote  ' There are too many new sections, too many new ideas in one piece' unquote. There they were right in front of me in the Concerto all flowing like a river. ( Te Deum and my Editor ).

I was jolted out of my usual reaction which is rather self condemning and found myself asking ' who made all these rules anyway?, Is there such a thing as ' too many ideas'? .

Maybe or maybe not...maybe there are just alot of opinions. Either way, Composition for me is not something I can command, it is something I can only receive and if Steiner is to be believed  the material is gathered in sleep from a dimension called ' Devachan'.

The work of the Composer then is to take the material and create a structure which has the potential to inspire the listener and connect her/him with the Heart.  That again of course is another opinion :=)
