MUSIC IS A MORAL LAW,
IT GIVES SOUL TO THE UNIVERSE
WINGS TO THE MIND.
FLIGHT TO THE IMAGINATION
A CHARM TO SADNESS
GAIETY AND LIFE TO EVERYTHING.
IT IS THE ESSENCE
OF ORDER AND LENDS TO ALL
THAT IS GOOD,JUST, AND BEAUTIFUL.

Welll! Here's an obvious statement!!!  ' Sound...Tone affects us' ...not only our ' ears' , not only our 'mood' but our whole Being!!  Just above, you will have seen the picture of the Human Chakra System, or I should say, a part of it, the part that is apparently resident ' in', 'around' the physical Body. So, do the Chakra's relate to particular sounds, notes or tones? and my answer is Yes and No, which is a tad confusing I will admit!!  ( This is only my opinion, admittedly based on some tangible  experience in my work as a Composer. )

The first obvious question one might ask is, ' do the chakras, ( being seven in the physical body) relate specifically to the diatonic scale which is the basis of so called ' Classical Music' and I would not be alone I am sure in saying, definately not. There are indeed seven notes in the diatonic scale ...in fact eight if you count the octave but there is not necessarily a correspondence between the System and the Scale.

Now if we take a look at the ' Harmonic Series ( above ) we may be nearer the mark. As you see, the intervals between notes/sounds in the Harmonic Series get closer as the tone gains height. The ' Higher chakras' are vibrating faster than the lower. However, having said all that, one must take into account the fact that there are no two Physiologies, Bodies, therefore Chakra Systems that are the same....the only ' uniformity' would be the position of each chakra, the colour...perhaps and even that would depend on the health, life style and ' evolution' of the person . The main attribute of the system is it's ability to convey Healing.

Traditionally each Chakra resonates to a particular Mantra...for example the Base Chakra resonates to LAM ..No!! not LAM as in Lamb but as in ' Alarm' without the A. Here's a little experiment you could try. Sit quietly and  either gently chant this sound or just hear it in your head for a few minutes and notice how you feel! hear it at different speeds....and  feel the effect.

If you have done this sincerely, you should have noticed a good feeling in your Phyical Body. Now expand your awareness to hearing the sounds or noise going on around you in your home at the moment but keep the focus of awareness on your body.....What was the feeling??? When out in the street or in the car , do the same thing and monitor the feeling??? Notice discomfort, pain, stiffness etc.. Take a walk in the country or a forest or wood and become ' Present'  in the same way.....what is the feeling now?

The Society we have created is now so full of distraction, noise ( note I didn't say ' Sound ), pocket technologie that for the most part, we spend the day almost totally unconscious , i'e not aware of our ' Presence' or that of others for that matter. Here's another little experiment you could try....when you go out, try observing yourself and your reactions to others ( without judgement ) , be honest!!  If we can do this for even 2 or 3 minutes , we are, in those moments being ' Present', which leads nicely to the main theme of this discussion.

A friend said to me the other day ' I heard Mahler's Resurrection Symphony yesterday evening'....Good gracious I replied, where was it on....I missed it!!! ' Oh no' he replied, I listened to a very good recording on the computer!!!  HA!!! he certainly listened to a digitally reproduced imitation of the work but he did not ' 'Hear' the work!!  No?? He could not. Music is more than that.....it is experiencing and to experience all that Music can do in terms of Balancing, Healing, Inspiring, Uplifting , Connecting people to their Hearts and Souls and to each other which is conveyed via the Chakra System  one must be ' Present ', .In the Concert Hall, and' Conscious '.

Next time you have an opportunity to go to a ' Live Concert' ( amazing term that!!! ) try experimenting as proposed here....Be present by allowing your awareness to focus gently on your physical body. The mind has a mission to distract, to steal us from our true selves...it's called the Ego .

I certainly can't claim to have mastered it myself, I'm still practising but please don't think that you have 'Heard' and Experienced a musical work via digitally produced imitations ,usually made in a studio with endless stopping and starting , replacing ' unsatisfactory' sections and all sorts of technological tricks ....because you haven't .

Beauty, Wisdom, Heart, Soul, Balance and Love are the gifts of  'experiencing '   Music.
