MUSIC IS A MORAL LAW,
IT GIVES SOUL TO THE UNIVERSE
WINGS TO THE MIND.
FLIGHT TO THE IMAGINATION
A CHARM TO SADNESS
GAIETY AND LIFE TO EVERYTHING.
IT IS THE ESSENCE
OF ORDER AND LENDS TO ALL
THAT IS GOOD,JUST, AND BEAUTIFUL.

I have just fished out  a sketch I made of the Magnificat some years ago. It's been in the bottom of the ' to do' draw. I was in the cafe at lunch time wondering just why I had taken out this score at this moment?  The last two concertos I have written have been all about the projection of Feminine and Masculine energies in our world...or at least this was the meaning which unfolded to me as I wrote first ' Le chant de Venus' and secondly ' Venus Conjunct Mars' ....neither concerto has yet had a Premiere, although ' le chant de Venus ' has been favourably received by a German Radio Orchestra and is likely to be performed in due course.

Magnificat ...as everyone surely knows was the Song or Prayer alllegedly expressed by the ' Virgin' Mary on discovering her pregnancy with Jesus. What immediately became clear to me as I started to orchestrate this work ( Strings, Two Horns in F, Timpani ) was that ' my ' Virgin Mary is not a Virgin in the sexual sense that the Church has insisted is the only Truth.

What is ' Virginity' really?..it surely is a Spiritual way of Being and has absolutely nothing to do with sexual abstinence !!  well it is clear to me that this is what the Music is expressing and I can only fully concur. My ' Virgin Mary' is a Woman completely conscious of her Feminine and Masculine qualities  ( which we all possess)...she has no fear of either quality which makes her pretty unique!!  In our world, the projection of these qualities in both genders are demonstrating some very negative, fearful and competitive relationships. One only has to look around to see how they are manifesting at variance with one another ...oh and don't let's forget to look inside ourselves too Jil !!

The score of Magnificat features a Soprano Soloist ...no Chorus ( yet and maybe not at all )...She is Mary the Virgin. It is from the first note deeply Dramatic and Passionate as well as Tender and Compassionate and I like it!! although some people will criticise my frequent changes of key. These were instinctive but then I realised  that one of the many qualities of the Virgin is no fear of Change.....Change for her is always seen as '  Transformation'.and to be welcomed! She was/is Animus and Anima...totally Unified, Complimentary knowing no ' Separation' ... I have so far only orchestrated 12 bars but this that I have described here is already ' a word become flesh' for me musically if I may coin a famous Creative Phrase!

This was my feeling as I sat to consider and review what I had already written in the Cafe. In addition I was reflecting on how the Anglican denomination allows Women Priests but is now objecting to their becoming Bishops...Is this not a vivid reminder of the confusion that we have as a Collective over just this subject and how it involves the suppression of the Feminine!!....I then left and went to find my car in the parking....this was amazing!!! just read on.

The first thing I noticed was a Police Notice on the windscreen!! What???? I picked it up and saw it was a large fine. I went immediately to the Police Municipal to find it closed of course! On arriving back at the car, I was confronted by a very angry and rude couple indeed. The woman shouted accusations at me and the man was even more offensive. They had good reason to be angry as I had inadvertently parked behind their car just touching the rear of their vehicle. I had thought they would exit forward but I was wrong! They could not reverse out and furthermore were mortified that their was a mark on their car. My goodness you would have thought it was a Nuclear Event!!

Just as the Policeman approached, I saw how weird it was that I had been thinking about just this manifestation in the Cafe and now I met it ' head on'!!! I did not react...I was also too shaken by the demonstration of so much violence but I have to say there was definately a connection between my reflections in the Cafe and this event....it set something off like fireworks.

It took all afternoon until about 5 for the situation to be resolved...papers to be examined, signed etc etc and then for me to be able to return home . I am very happy to say that gradually their anger cooled and we parted with smiles and handshakes and of course I had apologised. ... more than once! I could'nt  resist it! As I went to leave, I said...'You know why this has happend today?' No...It's the Full Moon!! I replied' ....Even the Policeman smiled knowingly and the couple exclaimed...in unison...Ah! Yes.
